I selected a range of text to replace in Microsoft Word 2003, and then started typing. But instead of the selected text replaced with the newly typed text, the selection was just cancelled and what I typed was inserted. Well, certainly I did not expect this to happen. Curious with what was happening, I selected again and hit backspace. What I expect was, the selected text should go away but they didn't !

Well, select and then hit delete key instead of backspace did delete the selected text, but this did not solve my real problem.

After searching for a while, I found the culprit of this behaviour.
At Tools | Options dialog box, on the Edit tab, I found that the "Replace Selected Text" item was unchecked. Checking this did solve my problem !

Please note that I am using Japanese version of MS Word, and the text "Replace Selected Text" is my own translation so the actual text might be different, but should not be far from it.
